Adopt a Forest Fairy is an initiative by the Wilderness Society to save the remaining 1500 Forest Fairies (Leadbeater's Possums) from extinction.
Forest Fairies are tiny possums that live in small pockets of forest near Melbourne in the hollows of gum trees which take up to 150 years to naturally develop. These old-growth forests are being demolished at an alarming rate. Only 1,500 Fairy Possums now remain in the wild and, every day, logging is occurring in known Forest Fairy habitat.
The Wilderness Society is asking people to 'Adopt a Forest Fairy' and make a donation of as little as $5. Funds will go towards raising awareness and encouraging the next Victorian State Government to declare the Great Forest National Park in Victoria's Central Highlands, thereby creating a sanctuary and securing the Forest Fairy's home from logging forever.
To Adopt A Forest Fairy today, head to www.adoptaforestfairy.com and click on the 'Adopt a Forest Fairy' tab. Here you will be able to choose and name a Forest Fairy to be part your family.
