Birdlife Australia's Gluepot Reserve is only four hours' drive from Adelaide, but it feels a world away. The semi-arid mallee scrub plays host to 190 bird species, six of which are nationally endangered, as well as a range of other wildlife.
My sister Adrienne and I visited on a scorching day when it threatened to bucket down nearly the entire day. We were in a two-wheel drive and were getting nervous about the drive out... if it had started pouring, there's a good chance we would have become bogged.
The upside? As we were leaving we were treated to this spectacular rainbow against the storm clouds. And we made it out safely!
