Photographer: Shanna Bignell
Subject: Central Bearded Dragon (Pogona vitticeps)
Location: Gluepot Reserve, South Australia
Date: September 2014
My sister and I visited Gluepot, a Birdlife Australia Reserve, on a very hot day in September.
Gluepot is only four hours' drive from Adelaide, but it feels extremely remote. The semi-arid mallee scrub plays host to 190 bird species, six of which are nationally endangered.
There are also plenty of lovely reptiles at Gluepot and, due to the heat, we saw more reptiles than birds! This very cute Central Bearded Dragon was sitting on the warm sand on the Reserve's access road.
Central Bearded Dragons are very commonly kept as pets in Australia, but taking them from the wild is illegal - if you want one as a pet, make sure you obtain a suitable licence and purchase from a pet shop or reputable breeder.
